Customising the Basement lighting

I needed something with a rustic modern feel for the Basement apartment main living area. So I bought a shaded chandelier as I thought it had nice simple lines and might look good in an aged bronze or shabbied up a bit.

At first I just painted it a bronze with a slight black wash on it and called it a day.

But the orangey colour of the bronze and the stark white shades were bugging me. Solution? More black!

I probably need to stipple a bit of brown or bronze back on but we are getting somewhere. Next I needed to deal with the shades.

I took some of the twine on the left and wrapped it around them.

Not bad!

I'm quite liking this look.

 Much better!

Wait, not so fast.. I turned the lights on.

LOL.. there is no light!.. Epic Fail.. Oh well, I have a back up plan so back to the drawing board. :)

  1. Wa ha, sounds like something I might have tried! How about pasting thin brown paper over the lampshades? I'm sure you will figure something out.

  2. Love how it looks... maybe thinner twine? Or a brown cotton fabric instead? Get that burlap look but more light shining through it?

    1. Thanks Sheila, I'm definitely trying fabric. I'm thinking linen with twin trim. :)

  3. Well, I don't know...I love how it looks with the lights off. Maybe just put it somewhere it can look nice without having to light the area? :D

    1. I love how it looks too Brae. I was pretty disappointed it didn't light well. I'll have to have a think about where it might be able to go without actually lighting it. :)

  4. I love it!!! The colour you got is perfect! I'm going to have to come back and study it in the future when I need to modernize my metals! Personally I prefer my lights like this in the dollhouse to be ambient, maybe you could add another light in the room so that it's not totally dependant on this one alone? and instead it will just hint that it is lit?

    1. Thanks Kristine. :) The colour is just Bronze spray paint and a black wash.. really simple just the way I like it. :D I'm hoping to use this light somewhere, with slightly modified shades. :)
